Who can add people to the tree? The rules and how to avoid mistakes

Who adds, edits and deletes in the tree, and what to check before adding someone so they are not duplicated or deleted by mistake.

Adding people is not open to everyone. These are the rules:

CreatorAdminMember Add a person (parent, sibling, spouse, child)YesYes, if given the right to addNo Edit themselves and close relativesYesYesYes Edit anyone in the treeYesYes, if given the rightNo Delete a person (never themselves)YesYes, if given the rightNo Choose the adminsYesNoNo

Close relatives are parents, siblings, spouse and children. Admins are named by the creator alone, from people in the tree, and the creator decides for each admin: add? edit? delete? (Managing admins).

If you are an ordinary member

You cannot add anyone yourself. Ask the family creator or an admin, or send them an invitation link so they add the person, or the person joins with a request an admin approves (Invitations).

Before you add someone (to avoid mistakes)

  • Search first. Nothing checks for duplicates, so the same person could be added twice.
  • Add from the right person's card: a child from a parent, a wife from her husband, a brother or sister from a sibling. (How do I add?)
  • The first name only, in letters (up to 25 characters); the family name comes from the tree.
  • A phone number can belong to one person in the whole app. If it is refused because it is used, that person already has an account: invite them instead of adding them again.
  • Someone with an account and a tree of their own uses your invitation link and sends a join request an admin approves; they are then added to your tree and see its posts at once. A person can belong to three trees at most.
  • Deleting takes the person out of the tree and the counts and ordinary users cannot undo it; edit instead when you only need a correction (Edit and delete).
  • You can make up to 20 changes a minute.

Every addition, change and deletion is recorded in Family activity with who did it, so a mistake is easy to trace and fix. At the top of the tree page a card shows these rules, open the first time; you can hide it (Got it) and show it again whenever you like.
